History of Château Mirande

The origins of the Château de Mirande date back to the 11th century when it was part of the imposing abbey of Cluny which had dependencies all over Europe. Its importance is illustrated by the fact that until the construction of St Peter’s Basilica in Rome in the 16th century, the church of Cluny was the largest sacred space in Christendom. The name “Mirande” comes from Old French and means “beautiful view”. The following information dates back to 1560 when the modest estate belonged to the lords Pierre Bettel and Pierre Puget. Between 1621 and 1625 the owner was Jean de Buisson. Around 1690 the castle was owned by Jacques Bordet, “the lawyer in parliament” and later by his children. In the 18th century the lord of Senozan acquired it. In 1789, the year of the French Revolution, Mr Moiro was the owner. We don’t know what happened there at that time, but the building, when examined carefully, gives us some clues.
A postcard from the late 19th century bears the following inscription: “Château de Mirande à Montbellet, Saône et Loire, du fief de Mirande (1763), il n’reste qu’une tour.
The present gracious dwelling, built in the middle of a beautiful green park, belongs to M. Protat, general councillor, who is the sub-prefect of Rethel and secretary of the Ardèche and Maine-et-Loire.

In 1944 the Baron de L’Epine acquired the estate from the Viscount de Balorre. In 2011 the Roser family finally settled in Mirande. They have carried out major renovation work while strictly preserving its original character. The premises thus created make the estate, for the first time in almost a thousand years, a place where, from all over the world, lovers of Burgundy, its history, its way of life, its wines, its Crémant and its cheeses, meet and exchange.
